Hong Kong has an extensive and expanding metro system. Mostly underground the rail lines allow quick transit along Hong Kong Island as well as Kowloon and the New Territories.

Expansions are currently underway or proposed to cover the south of Hong Kong Island as well as a new high speed rail link to connect through to the Chinese Mainland.

Over the year the passenger numbers have grown and often the carriages are packed with drowsing commuters. The above picture is one of the exceptions, as well as being nearly completed empty the carriages still have seats. Some of these have been removed to allow more room for standing commuters.

MTR journeys can be paid for with the Octopus RFID card which can also be used on bus services.

Come late and its standing room all the way.
